GENSLER 2012-2014 NEW YORK, NEW YORK - COMPLETED
Status : Completed
Location : New York, NY
Year : 2012-2014
Architect : Gensler - Rocco, EJ, Nour, Eric Consultants : JLL; WB Engineers; Vidaris; Lerch Bates; LeMessurier
Project Role : Job Captain. My project focus was architectural documentation & collaboration with Leo Villareal / Parallel Development for the installation of their work “Volume”, including initial schematic designs, documentation & construction coordination of all trades. In addition my role focused on the lobby glazing replacement & modernization, along with stone selection and specifications for the refinishing of terrazzo and replacement slab selections on site in Italy.
The project aimed to make the 30’ lobby space feel like a gallery - both clean & bright. It features a hanging rotation of art selections for tenants & visitors while architecture & aesthetics were intended to bring back the scale & beauty of the original international style design
Sixth Avenue is a haven for corporate art, from Robert Indian’s Love to Curved Cube outside the Time Life Building, to say nothing of the massive galleries spanning the entire block between 51st and 52nd streets inside the UBS Building. The Avenue of the Americas is also home to an aging, Class-A building portfolio - many of which require a refresh or modernization to rejuvenate their original splendor. The building merges these two currents, popular public art and a sparkling new lobby into a new striking whole. The centerpiece of a new space is a sparkling hung lighting installation "Volume" - a collaboration with light artist Leo Villareal. At 90 feet long, 12 feet high & 6 feet deep, the sculpture is suspended by cable from a secondary steel structure. Integration of architectural, building & installation systems was detailed & phased to correspond with ground level lobby scope & maintaining functionality for tenants during construction.
